Join >Scammers are targeting Australians desperate to get their hands on Apple's latest premium smartphones, using the promise of an iPhone 11 Pro to lure in unsuspecting victims.
The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has warned people to be on the lookout for the scam, which uses fake emails to 'phish' for information that could be used to steal your identity.

'This is a phishing scam that links to a fake web form,' ACMA said on its verified Facebook account on Wednesday.
'It tries to trick you into giving your username, password or credit card details.'

The scam tells targets an unnamed Facebook friend has tagged them in a competition to win the new iPhone 11 Pro, then directs them to confirm their delivery address and click on a link to claim their prize.

Another scam directs targets to click on a link and confirm their account details that have been edited to look like an official Apple link in order to take control of your Apple ID, used to access services like iCloud.
A similar iCloud scam threatens users that all the data on their devices will be deleted in 48 hours if they don't restore their account by clicking on a link.

Using threats and imposing time limits are a just a couple of many strategies used by scammers to put the pressure on.
ACMA said it had noted a significant increase in the amount of scams related to Apple products and services being reported since the iPhone 11 launched three weeks ago.

Phishing scams have been siphoning an ever-increasing amount of money from Australians over the last few years.
The amount reported lost to scams so far this year is almost triple what it was three years ago.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission's ScamWatch website shows already this year more than $1 million has been lost to phishing scams, with over 18,000 scams reported so far.

Only 2 per cent of the scams have resulted in actual financial loss, but the few hundred people who fell for it lost on average a little more than $2800.

In comparison, the iPhone 11 Pro being used as bait in the latest scam starts at $1749.
It's possible this doesn't show the full extent of the problem though, as some scam victims don't report it to authorities, possibly out of embarrassment for having fallen for it but potentially because they don't know how.

HOW TO AVOID A PHISHING SCAM
• Check the sender's email address (is it really from who it says it is?)
• Check for grammar and typos (they are an easy giveaway, especially for scams originating in non-English speaking countries). For instance, the aforementioned iCloud scam threatens 'all your content and settings will be erase' rather than 'erased'.
• Be suspicious of links and attachments in emails, messages and SMS. Hovering over a link in some web browsers will show the destination, but you can also right click to copy the address and paste it into the address bar or a separate document to see where it goes before you click it.

• If an unsolicited offer you've received sounds too good to be true, odds are that it is.

• If an email purporting to be from a company you have an account with (such as a bank, phone carrier or other service provider) begins with a generic salutation like 'Dear customer', it's probably a scam.
• Companies generally don't ever ask for account information via email or over the phone, especially when making first contact.
